What happens when an AI answers your phone
An AI voice agent answers your business line on the first ring, holds a real spoken conversation, and either resolves the call or routes it. It runs on your existing SIP trunk or PBX with no number porting, and every call returns a transcript, a sentiment score and an itemised cost in rupees.
A missed call is the cheapest sale you will ever lose. Most Indian businesses lose several a day — after hours, during lunch, or because all three lines were busy at once — and never learn what any of them wanted.
Here is what an AI voice agent does about that, based on how Vio works.
It uses the phone system you already have
This is the part people expect to be hard. Vio connects to your own SIP trunk or PBX — FreePBX, Asterisk, 3CX — as a bring-your-own-carrier setup, or imports numbers you already run on Twilio. There is no porting, no rip-and-replace, and you keep your existing numbers and your existing carrier rates.
You also choose the blast radius. The agent answers only the DIDs or extensions you point at it, so you can put it on the overflow line for a fortnight before you let it near the main number.
It sounds like a phone call, not a kiosk
Two things separate a call people tolerate from one they hang up on. The first is latency: the agent replies in well under a second, so there is no dead air where the caller wonders if the line dropped. The second is barge-in — the caller can talk over the agent and it stops to listen, the way a person would.
It speaks Indian languages including Hindi and English, with the Hinglish code-switching people actually use on the phone. You can pin a language per agent or let it detect the caller's. And each agent can be tuned toward lower latency or higher accuracy, because a booking line and a technical support line do not want the same trade-off.
It can do things, not just say things
A voice agent that can only talk is an answering machine with better grammar. Mid-call, the agent can:
- Call your own APIs — check an order status, look up a booking, hold a slot.
- Transfer to a human, live, when the call needs one.
- Schedule its own callback, and when it rings back it resumes the earlier conversation instead of starting from "how may I help you".
That last one matters more than it sounds. Most callbacks fail because the second call has no memory of the first.
Every call comes back with its homework done
| What you get per call | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Full transcript | Searchable record of what was actually said |
| Sentiment score | Find the calls that went badly without listening to all of them |
| Goal-met rating | Did the call do the thing it existed to do |
| Itemised cost in ₹ | No monthly surprise, priced per call |
You can also watch calls live while they are in progress, which is how most people spend their first week.
It makes calls too
The same agent runs outbound. Upload a contact list and the dialer paces calls in parallel, retries no-answers on its own schedule, and tracks the funnel from dialled to connected to goal-met — so a lead-gen or follow-up campaign is a list and a target, not a room full of people and a spreadsheet.
What it costs
₹4.25 per minute of AI conversation on the standard engine — about ₹13 for a three-minute call — itemised per call in the dashboard. A premium low-latency engine is quoted on request. Phone-line minutes stay on your own carrier bill, which is the honest way to price it: we do not mark up your telephony.
Prices exclude GST. There is a fuller breakdown against other vendors on the AI voice pricing comparison.
What it does not do
It will not carry a genuinely complex negotiation, and it should not be pointed at your main line on day one. It also is not self-serve — Vio is set up with you rather than signed up for, so agents are configured against your actual call flows before anything answers a real customer.
If you want to hear one, get in touch and we will put a test agent on a number you can ring yourself.
