What an AI outbound calling campaign actually looks like
An AI outbound campaign dials a contact list with an AI voice agent instead of a calling team. You upload a CSV, choose the agent, and the dialer paces the calls, retries no-answers on its own schedule, and returns a transcript, a sentiment score and an itemised rupee cost for every call it makes.
Every business with a lead list has the same quiet problem. The list is bigger than the number of people available to call it, so the calls that get made are the recent ones, and everything older than a fortnight is written off without anyone deciding to write it off.
Outbound AI calling exists for that backlog. Here is what running one actually involves on Vio, and where it stops being a good idea.
The setup is a list and an agent
You upload a CSV of contacts, choose which agent makes the calls, and start the campaign. The agent is the same object that answers your inbound line — same prompt structure, same tools, same voice — pointed outward.
That matters more than it sounds, because it means an outbound campaign is not a separate product with separate configuration to keep in sync. If you fix the way the agent explains your pricing, both directions get the fix.
The dialer paces itself
A campaign does not fire five hundred calls into the network the moment you press start. The dialer runs a pacer that keeps a set number of calls in flight and refills as they end, which does two things: it keeps you inside what your trunk can actually carry, and it means the campaign degrades gracefully instead of failing all at once when a carrier gets unhappy.
No-answers are retried on a schedule rather than immediately. A human who missed your call at 11am because they were driving is not more likely to answer at 11:01. They might at 4pm.
Callbacks that remember the first call
The single most useful behaviour is the one that happens after the call. If the person asks to be rung back later — after work, tomorrow, after they have spoken to their partner — the agent books that callback itself and Vio places the call at the right time.
When it rings back, it resumes the earlier conversation rather than opening with "how may I help you". Most callback systems fail precisely here: the second call has no memory of the first, the customer repeats themselves, and the goodwill from the first call is spent on admin.
Every call comes back measured
| What lands in the dashboard | What you do with it |
|---|---|
| Full transcript | Search the whole campaign for what people actually objected to |
| Sentiment score | Find the calls that went badly without listening to hundreds |
| Goal-met rating | Did the call achieve the thing it was dialled for |
| Funnel counts | Dialled → connected → goal met, per campaign |
| Itemised cost in ₹ | Per call, so a campaign has a real cost per outcome |
Which turns a campaign into an experiment you can read. The first thing most people find is not a technology problem — it is that a third of the list has the wrong number, or that everyone objects to the same thing at the same point in the script.
What it costs to run
AI conversation is ₹4.25 per minute on the standard engine — roughly ₹13 for a three-minute call. Telephony minutes stay on your own carrier bill, because Vio runs on your existing SIP trunk and we do not mark up your telephony. A thousand-contact campaign at forty per cent connect and two minutes average conversation is a few thousand rupees of AI, plus whatever your carrier charges for the minutes.
Prices exclude GST, and there is a fuller comparison against other vendors on the AI voice pricing page.
Where this stops being a good idea
Outbound is the half of voice AI that can damage you, so be blunt about it.
Call people with a reason to hear from you: your own leads, your own customers, a form they filled, a demo they booked, a renewal they have. Cold lists bought from a broker will get you complaints regardless of how good the agent sounds, and India's DPDP Act 2023 is not sympathetic about where the data came from.
Say it is an AI at the start. It tests better than pretending, and the alternative gets found out anyway within about two sentences.
And keep the transfer path live. An outbound campaign that qualifies a hot lead and then cannot hand them to a human while they are still interested has converted enthusiasm into a callback, which is a worse trade than it looks.
If you want to hear one before you point it at your list, get in touch and we will put a test agent on a number you can ring yourself.
